Conquering College as an Only Child

College is a pivotal time in life, but for an only child, it brings its own set of challenges. From managing academic and social responsibilities to cultivating a resilient mindset, the journey can be overwhelming. However, it also offers the chance to develop skills and independence that will serve you well into the future. In 2023, I began brainstorming ideas for a book based on my experiences. Initially, I considered writing about navigating the U.S. education system as someone who transitioned from a Nigerian boarding school to a public high school, a community college, and then private colleges. But I realized that a key issue I would have to address is the the difference in expectations surrounding the visa process, along with the often narrow perceptions of international students in academia. Without personal insights, the research would lack the depth needed to truly do justice to the advantages and challenges. As a result, I decided to focus on another topic: thriving in college as an only child, which I began in January 2024.

The Writing Journey

Writing The Solo Scholar: Conquering College as an Only Child was a mentally stimulating process. The freshman chapter, in particular, required extra attention, along with several additions and revisions. This section lays the foundation for the entire book, focusing on the essentials for navigating your first year of college. I wanted to ensure it captured the critical steps that make future years more manageable.

After refining the freshman chapter, I moved on to the sophomore, junior, and senior sections. These parts of the book came together during a weekend in August 2024. I worked diligently to ensure that each chapter built on the previous one, guiding readers through the progression of their college journey. I finished the book that month, but after proofreading, making format changes, and finalizing the book cover design, I wasn’t satisfied with the final result until December.

I couldn’t have completed this book without the talented freelancers I collaborated with. A special thank you again to Arushibarathi and Kexa from Fiverr, whose skills and creativity brought this project to life.

Why College Is Different for Only Children
Attending college as an only child often means facing challenges others may not encounter. Without siblings to share the experience, you may find yourself:

1. Navigating common stereotypes and misconceptions about only children in the college environment.
2. Dealing with how your birth order may influence your perspective and experiences throughout your college journey.
3. Knowing how to make the most out of campus resources.

These challenges, however, can also be opportunities for growth when approached with the right mindset and guidance.
