3 ESSENTIAL APPS EVERY COLLEGE STUDENT NEEDS ON THEIR PHONE
For today’s blog post, I want to share my experience with three essential apps that have helped me survive the often tedious but rewarding journey of absorbing knowledge in college.
1. Alarmy
The first app I highly recommend is Alarmy. I stumbled upon this gem after watching Jessica Neistadt’s video 10 APPS EVERY GIRL BOSS NEEDS on YouTube, and let me tell you
--it wakes you up by forceeeee!
Unlike your standard alarm that you can snooze without a second thought, Alarmy requires you to complete a task before it shuts off. The tasks range from solving math problems, taking pictures, shaking your phone, walking, typing, and even memorizing a game. While some features like typing and walking are only available to premium members, there’s still a great variety to choose from for free.
Personally, I chose to solve math problems. Does that make me a nerd? Well, I am an Economics major, after all! Solving problems helps wake up my brain, even as my eyes are still adjusting. But I’m not going to lie—I sometimes miss a couple of problems because I’m still mastering the art of “GET UP, YEYE” the first time the alarm goes off. 😅
While Alarmy’s standard sounds can be a little annoying (in the best way possible), it definitely gets the job done. I encourage you to try this app to turn waking up into a productive moment and start your day right. Just make sure to turn the volume all the way up!
2. Word of the Day
Have you ever needed an antonym or synonym to spice up your writing? That’s where Word of the Day comes in handy. Not only does it help me expand my vocabulary, but it also allows me to choose when I want to learn a new word. Currently, I have it set for 8:00 a.m., 30 minutes before Alarmy goes off.
I decided to use this app because, at Grinnell, some students would occasionally get criticized for using complex words when simpler ones could’ve worked just fine. While I sometimes agree, depending on the context, I also believe that expanding your vocabulary shouldn't be frowned upon. Knowledge is power, and Word of the Day helps me grow my word bank. Plus, it lets me save my favorite words for future use—so win-win!
3. UniDays
UniDays is hands down my favorite app out of the three. Why? It helps me save money! 💸
UniDays offers student discounts at some of my favorite stores, including but not limited to BH Cosmetics, Audible, Apple Music, Microsoft, and Boohoo. Signing up is simple: all you need to do is verify your student email, and voilà—you’re in! You must be a college or university student to access these exclusive deals, which is pretty cool because it’s like getting rewarded for pursuing higher education.
Final Thoughts
I hope you find this list of apps helpful! Let me know in the comments what your favorite app is to use in college.
